Five types of casual shirts you need in your wardrobe
Posted on 29 December 2021
Spread collar shirt
The most popular of men’s casual shirts. The collar points spread away from the center placket and are available in a variety of widths. A standard spread collar has a 5” space between the collar points. The different widths accentuate different facial features: narrow collars emphasize a long slender face and vice versa. Traditionally a spread collar was worn with a tie so it is usually the most common shirt in most men's closets despite ties becoming less popular. Wear yours with the top button undone, dark washed jeans, and your favorite sneakers.
Utility shirt
Whether cotton or linen, the utility shirt is designed with practicality and durability in mind. You will find a surplus of buttons, pockets and ways to roll up the sleeves. Typical colours of fabric used for utility shirts are navy, grey, khaki and olive - tones that will not show marks or wear easily. The utility shirt is not designed to be worn in formal or business settings, but is ideal as a comfortable, cool casual wear.
Denim shirt
Originally worn as uniform by labourers and prison convicts, the denim shirt is now a modern staple. A highly durable and practical shirt available in a variety of shades and weights from dark denim to bleached denim. For a stylish laid-back look, pair your shirt with black jeans and white trainers.
Over-shirt
Usually a slightly heavier weight garment, over-shirts are a hybrid between a shirt and a jacket, designed to serve as an additional layer to provide warmth. Not only are over-shirts practical but also highly fashionable, no weekend look is complete without one!
Button-down shirt
The button-down shirt is highly versatile, both in its forms and variations, but also in its purpose. Button down shirts are suitable for a whole range of occasions from office wear, smart-casual parties, to weekend wear.
Collarless shirts
Collarless shirts have a number of different names including Nehru collar, Mandarin collar and Grandad collar. Typically the band is usually 1 inch wide or less, and is soft and pliable without interfacing. The lack of collar makes this shirt great for summer months and sunny vacations. Wear the shirt buttoned all the way for a modern look, or with the top buttons undone for a relaxed casual style.
